Need a Yunnan itinerary? 7 days is enough to fly into Kunming, ride the train north through Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La, then return to Kunming for a night flight home. It suits independent travellers who like ancient towns, mountain lakes, glaciers and photography, and Muslim travellers who want to know where the halal food is. The best times to go are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).

Yunnan 7-day itinerary

Your bases: Kunming (Night 1), Dali (Night 2), Lijiang (Nights 3–5) and Shangri-La (Night 6). Trains link every city, and inside each city you use Didi, China's ride-hailing app (think Grab).

Day 1: KUL → Kunming

Fly from KLIA or KLIA2 and land in Kunming in the late evening or around midnight. Metro Line 6 is the cheapest way into the city at CNY 6 (about RM4), or take a Didi if you land late. Pick a hotel near Kunming Station (昆明站) for an easy start tomorrow. Save sightseeing for Day 7.

Day 2: Kunming → Dali

  • Take a morning train to Dali, about 2–2.5 hours. Check which Kunming station is printed on your ticket.
  • Longkan Wharf on Erhai Lake: lakeside coffee and a bike ride with Cangshan Mountain behind you.
  • Halal lunch on Chang'er Avenue, a street of Hui Muslim restaurants, then Dali's "Santorini" (the Erhai Ecological Corridor).
  • Dali Old Town by night, with lantern-lit lanes along Fuxing Lu and Renmin Lu.

Tip: stay just outside the old town so Didi can reach your door and you never drag a suitcase over cobblestones.

Day 3: Dali → Lijiang

Start at the Dali Luge Theme Park viewpoint for a bird's-eye view of Erhai Lake and Cangshan. The viewpoint is free (the luge is extra) and usually clearest before 11 am. After a midday train to Lijiang, visit Black Dragon Pool with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain rising behind it. Spend the evening in Lijiang Ancient Town and Sifang Square, an 800-year-old Naxi town and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 4: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The highlight of the trip. Ride the Glacier Park cable car up to 4,506 m, then walk the boardwalks at Blue Moon Valley's turquoise lakes, and add Spruce Meadow if you still have energy. Start early, because the mountain often clouds over by midday. It is 0 °C to −5 °C at the top even in summer, and there is no halal restaurant inside the scenic area, so pack food from Lijiang.

Day 5: Tiger Leaping Gorge

One of the deepest gorges in the world, and no trekking is needed. An escalator takes you down to the river bank at the Upper Gorge to see Tiger Leaping Rock, then a mountain road shows you the canyon from about 1,000 m above. The day ends at the Tea-Horse Guesthouse terrace, facing the 13 peaks of Jade Dragon. A private car is more flexible than the tourist bus; agree the plan and price first.

Day 6: Lijiang → Shangri-La

A short train ride (about 1–1.5 hours) takes you into the Tibetan highlands. Rest for 1–2 hours on arrival, because Shangri-La sits at 3,200 m. Spend the afternoon at Heidu Café overlooking the Napa Hai grasslands, then explore Dukezong Old Town and spin the giant golden prayer wheel in Guishan Park. Nights are cold here, 5–10 °C even in summer.

Day 7: Shangri-La → Kunming → KUL

Catch the 07:20 train to Kunming (arriving around midday) and leave your bags at the station's luggage storage. Spend the afternoon in the Shuncheng Mosque area for Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles and Zohor prayers, then shop at Luoshiwan wholesale market. Book an evening flight home, ideally 9 pm or later.

Halal food & prayer spaces

Yunnan has a large Hui Muslim community that has lived here for centuries, so halal food is much easier to find than in most of China.

  • Kunming: the Shuncheng Mosque area (顺城清真寺) is the heart of the Muslim quarter, packed with 清真 restaurants and street food. Try Crossing Bridge Rice Noodles, halal beef noodle soup and Muslim flatbread.
  • Dali: Chang'er Avenue (苍洱路) is the most reliable place for halal food, with a mosque nearby.
  • Lijiang: look for the Hui Muslim quarter near the old town. Rice noodles or wild mushroom hotpot at a 清真 restaurant are safe choices.
  • Shangri-La: a sizeable Hui community, with several 清真 options around Dukezong Old Town.
  • Mountain days: there is no halal restaurant inside the Jade Dragon scenic area, and the Tea-Horse Guesthouse at Tiger Leaping Gorge is not a halal kitchen. Bring a packed halal lunch from Lijiang and just enjoy the terrace view.

How to spot halal food

  • Look for 清真 (qīngzhēn) on doors, stalls and packaging. It means halal.
  • Hui Muslim restaurants (回族餐厅) are generally fully halal. Outside the Muslim quarters, check before you order.
  • Show the Chinese rather than trying to pronounce it, for example 这个是清真食品吗? (Is this halal?).

Prayer and qibla

The mosque near Chang'er Avenue works well for Zohor or Asar on Day 2, and Kunming's historic Shuncheng Mosque for Zohor on Day 7. For prayer times, qibla direction and the nearest mosque, use Muslim Pro and set each city as you go.

Altitude, weather and getting set up in China

Altitude sickness

  • Symptoms (headache, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, poor sleep) usually appear 6–12 hours after arriving.
  • Rest on arrival, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and skip strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Oxygen canisters (CNY 30–40) are sold on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; buy one before the glacier.
  • Heart condition, high blood pressure or a breathing problem? See your doctor before this trip.

What to pack

  • Warm layers and a proper jacket for Shangri-La nights. At the glacier you can rent a down jacket for CNY 20–30.
  • Sunglasses and SPF 50+ sunscreen, as the high-altitude sun on Days 4–6 is strong.
  • Closed shoes with good grip for boardwalks and stairs.

Payments, internet and apps

  • Link Alipay to a credit or prepaid card, not a debit card, and carry CNY 300–500 in cash for emergencies.
  • Install and test a VPN while you are still in Malaysia. Google, WhatsApp and Instagram are blocked, and you cannot download VPN apps once you are in China.
  • Use Apple Maps (iPhone) or AMaps (Android) instead of Google Maps.

Book before you go

  1. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain tickets (Scenic Area plus glacier cable car, from about CNY 310 or RM186): buy them before you leave Malaysia. The daily quota is limited and sells out.
  2. Intercity trains on Trip.com, 3–5 days ahead.
  3. Hotels just outside the old towns of Dali and Lijiang, and a room with proper heating in Shangri-La.
  4. Flights early if your dates fall on Golden Week (1–7 Oct) or Chinese New Year (6 Feb 2027).
  5. eSIM or roaming, a VPN and travel takaful (about RM30–60 for 7 days).
  6. Register on EMAS at e-mas.kln.gov.my and save the number of the Malaysian Consulate-General in Kunming.
