Hanoi & Sapa 4-day itinerary (4D3N)
Sapa is the heart of the trip; Hanoi gets the evening of Day 3 and all of Day 4. Note: the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed every Monday and Friday, and closed for maintenance from 4 Sep to 2 Nov 2026.
Day 1: KL → Hanoi → straight up to Sapa
- Land at Noi Bai Terminal 2 in the morning. Activate your eSIM and withdraw VND for two days, since you head straight to the mountains.
- Take a bus that picks up at the airport (HK Buslines, Interbus or a limousine van), 5–6 hours. Bus stops are rarely halal, so buy bread and snacks at the airport.
- Arrive late afternoon, pray Dhuhr and Asr combined (jama' ta'khir), then walk to the Stone Church, Sapa Lake and Sun Plaza. Dinner at Hajah Hawa, which has a surau upstairs.
- Tip: Make sure your ticket says "Noi Bai Airport T2" as the pick-up point, and save the operator's Zalo number.
Day 2: Fansipan, Moana & the Alpine Coaster
- Catch the Muong Hoa train early from Sun Plaza to the cable-car station. Clouds are usually thinnest around 8–10am.
- A 15–20-minute cable car lifts you to 3,143 m Fansipan, the "Roof of Indochina", 7–10°C colder than town. Climb 600+ steps or ride the summit funicular.
- Lunch at Sapa Halal Restaurant, then the Moana Sapa photo park and the Alpine Coaster Bản Mòng. Dinner: hotpot (lẩu) at Hajah Hawa or Kachi Kitchen Sapa.
- Tip: If Fansipan is fogged in, swap it with Day 3. The Rong May Glass Bridge is an optional swap for Moana and the coaster.
Day 3: Cat Cat Village, then down to Hanoi
- Leave your bags at the hotel and walk 30–40 minutes down to Cat Cat Village for traditional H'mong houses and Tien Sa Waterfall. Take a taxi back up; it is steep.
- Buy H'mong and Red Dao woven cloth, but skip Sapa apple wine, which is alcoholic.
- Lunch at Sapa Banana Leaf and pray Dhuhr and Asr combined (jama' taqdim) in its small prayer room before an early-afternoon bus to Hanoi.
- Reach the Old Quarter in the evening, eat at Kachi Kitchen or Hanoi Delights, then stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake. Its streets go car-free on Friday to Sunday nights.
Day 4: Hanoi & flying home
- Morning at Ba Dinh Square (free), the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum if it is open, and the One Pillar Pagoda. Dress modestly.
- The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then Train Street or Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake.
- Pray Dhuhr at Al-Noor Mosque and have halal pho at Zaynab next door. On Fridays, arrive before 12:00 for Jumu'ah.
- Afternoon shopping at Dong Xuan Market and Hàng Gai (silk), then a Grab to Noi Bai (45–60 minutes).
- Tip: After immigration, pray Maghrib and Isha combined in the Terminal 2 prayer room near Gate 37.

Halal food & prayer spaces
Hanoi has a historic mosque and about a dozen halal restaurants, and Sapa has four, all on Thác Bạc Street: enough to eat halal every day.
Restaurants on this route
- Hajah Hawa (Sapa): Malaysian and Vietnamese dishes such as kangkung belacan, nasi goreng kampung and hotpot, with a surau upstairs.
- Sapa Halal Restaurant (Sapa): chicken biryani, curry, pho and fried spring rolls.
- Sapa Banana Leaf Halal (Sapa): halal Vietnamese food with mountain views and a small prayer room.
- Zaynab (Hanoi): halal pho and chicken bún chả next to Al-Noor Mosque. Small and fills up fast.
- Kachi Kitchen and Hanoi Delights (Old Quarter): Indian, Pakistani and Vietnamese dishes.
- Batavia (near Ba Dinh Square): Indonesian and Malay food, halal-certified.
How to spot safe food
- Avoid regular bún chả (pork), regular bánh cuốn (minced pork), chả lụa (pork sausage), bia hơi (beer) and rượu (liquor), including Sapa apple wine.
- Street stalls sometimes cook with lard or sprinkle pork floss on banh mi and pho.
- Hotel breakfasts are usually not halal. Book room-only, except at Sapa House Hotel, which is halal-certified and serves a halal breakfast.
- Fallbacks: vegetarian restaurants ("quán chay"), convenience-store bread, and cup noodles and dates from home.
Praying in Hanoi & Sapa
- Al-Noor Mosque in the Old Quarter, built by Indian Muslim traders in 1885–1890, is the only mosque in northern Vietnam. It has separate areas for men and women.
- Sapa has no mosque. Pray at the Hajah Hawa surau, the Sapa Banana Leaf prayer room or in your hotel room.
- The qibla is about 283° (west, slightly north). Maghrib is around 5:40pm in mid-October; use Muslim Pro for exact times, and combine and shorten prayers as a traveller.
The guidebook has a Vietnamese halal phrase card with pronunciation, such as "Tôi là người Hồi giáo" (I am Muslim). Screenshot it and show it to the seller.
Getting around & what to wear
Bus Noi Bai ↔ Sapa
- About 315 km, 5–6 hours. The last 30 minutes climb a winding mountain road, so pack motion-sickness pills.
- Options: sleeper buses, single or double cabins with curtains, and limousine vans. A single cabin costs about RM63–73 one way.
- Operators picking up at Noi Bai T2 include HK Buslines, G8 Open Tour, Sao Viet and King Express. Sao Viet is reportedly the only bus on this route with a toilet.
Grab in Hanoi, taxis in Sapa
- There is no Grab in Sapa. Use licensed taxis such as Taxi Xanh Sapa or Mai Linh, or ask your hotel to call one.
- In Hanoi, use Grab or Xanh SM. The mosque, Zaynab and Hoan Kiem Lake are all within 1.5 km in the Old Quarter.
- Carry cash in Sapa: small shops, taxis and village tickets take cash only.
Clothing & etiquette
- Sapa needs layers all year. In Dec–Feb, bring a thick jacket, beanie and gloves; Fansipan can drop below 0°C.
- Wear waterproof shoes, as the Cat Cat paths get slippery in rain. Pin your tudung securely against the wind.
- Cover shoulders and knees at pagodas, the mausoleum and villages, and ask before photographing H'mong and Dao people.
Book before you go
- Flights, 2–3 months ahead. Pick a morning arrival so you can catch the Day 1 bus to Sapa.
- Hotels: Sapa 2 nights, Hanoi 1 night. In Sapa, stay near Thác Bạc Street (ask for a heater); in Hanoi, the northern Old Quarter near Hàng Lược and the mosque.
- Buses Noi Bai T2 → Sapa and Sapa → Hanoi, about 2 weeks before.
- Fansipan and Alpine Coaster tickets, online or at the counter.
- eSIM and travel takaful, strongly recommended for the mountain and cable-car activities.
