If you want an Osaka itinerary 5 days halal-friendly from start to finish, the simplest plan is one hotel in Namba for all four nights: Dotonbori, Universal Studios Japan, Kyoto, Nara with Osaka Castle, then straight to the airport. It suits first-timers, families and friends who want theme parks, temples and easy halal food. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring the most comfortable temperatures.

  • Visa: Malaysians are visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism. Fill in Visit Japan Web before you fly to get immigration and customs QR codes.
  • Flights: direct flights from KL reach Kansai (KIX) in about 6 to 7 hours. Every direct flight home leaves in the morning, so Day 5 is a departure day.
  • Money: RM1 ≈ ¥38.5 (¥1,000 ≈ RM26). Carry ¥30,000–50,000 in cash; small eateries, temples and market stalls are often cash only.

Osaka 5-day itinerary

Day 1: Land at KIX, Kuromon Market & Dotonbori

  • Show your Visit Japan Web QR codes, withdraw yen at the Seven Bank ATM and buy an ICOCA card. Terminal 1 has a 24-hour prayer room on the 3rd floor.
  • Take the Nankai train to Namba (about 40–50 minutes). Check-in is usually 15:00, but hotels hold bags for free.
  • Lunch at Halal Ramen Honolu Namba, then Kuromon Ichiba, a 580 m covered market. Ask for seafood grilled with salt only; most stalls close by 17:00.
  • At dusk, walk the Shinsaibashi-suji arcade to the Glico Running Man sign, then dine at CHIBO Diversity Dotonbori or Ayam-ya Dotonbori.

Day 2: A full day at Universal Studios Japan

Arrive 30–45 minutes before opening and head straight to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter while queues are short. Once inside, claim a free Area Timed Entry Ticket for Super Nintendo World in the USJ app. Without an Express Pass, 60–120 minute waits are normal by late morning.

Outside food is not allowed at USJ except for special dietary needs. If you bring a packed halal meal, tell staff at bag check; they decide at the gate.

No restaurant in the park is halal-certified. Ask for the "non-pork, non-alcohol menu" at Studio Stars Restaurant or Discovery Restaurant, or get a re-entry stamp and eat at Universal CityWalk. To pray, ask any crew member for a Family Service Room.

Day 3: Kyoto day trip

The longest day, around 15,000 steps, so start early.

  • Fushimi Inari Taisha: thousands of vermilion torii gates, free and open 24 hours. Before 9:00 the lower gates are almost empty.
  • Gion & Nishiki Market: the geisha district, then a 400 m food street. Photos in Gion's private side lanes can bring a fine of up to ¥10,000.
  • Lunch & prayer: Gyumon Kyoto Gion serves halal-certified A5 wagyu ramen and yakiniku, and Kyoto Craft Center has a free prayer space.
  • Kinkaku-ji and Arashiyama: the Golden Pavilion, then the Bamboo Grove and Tenryu-ji garden in late-afternoon light. Yoshiya near Togetsukyo Bridge has a halal menu and a prayer room for customers.

Day 4: Nara in the morning, Osaka Castle & Shinsekai

Take the Kintetsu train from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara (about 40 minutes); it beats JR on price and the station is a 5-minute walk from Nara Park. Over 1,000 sika deer roam here and nip when they smell crackers, so keep snacks hidden and watch small children. See the 15 m bronze Great Buddha at Todai-ji, then lunch at Jinniyah Naramachi (halal-certified) or SAHHA.

Back in Osaka, visit Osaka Castle (built 1583, 8th-floor viewing deck), then Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku Tower as the lights come on. The kushikatsu stalls there serve pork, so have dinner at Halal Wagyu Osaka Panga (halal-certified, book ahead). Pack and settle your hotel bill tonight.

Day 5: Straight to KIX and home

Aim to be at KIX about 2.5 hours before your flight, and check the first Nankai train (around 5:00) on Google Maps the night before. At KIX, use the tax-refund kiosk before checking in bags. After immigration there are prayer rooms near Gate 16 and Gate 26.

This is only the outline. The full Osaka 5D4N guidebook adds the hour-by-hour plan, train routes with fares, map links for every restaurant, prayer times, Plan B ideas and booking links.

Halal food & prayer spaces

Osaka is one of Japan's easiest cities for Muslim travellers. Know the three labels: halal-certified (checked by a body such as the Japan Halal Foundation, the safest choice), all-halal but not certified, and Muslim-friendly (a halal menu, but possibly a shared kitchen or alcohol served).

Places from the guidebook:

  • Halal Wagyu Osaka Panga (Shinsaibashi): A5 wagyu yakiniku, halal-certified.
  • Halal Ramen Honolu Namba and Honolu Grande Shinsaibashi: chicken ramen, takoyaki and okonomiyaki, halal-certified.
  • Halal Yakiniku Zerohachi and Tulufan (Namba): wagyu and Uyghur noodles, both halal-certified.
  • Lanzhou Halal Beef Lamian (Namba): all-halal, not certified.
  • CHIBO Diversity Dotonbori: Muslim-friendly okonomiyaki, not fully certified.

In convenience stores, scan ingredient lists with Google Translate's camera and avoid ポーク (pork), ラード (lard), ゼラチン (gelatine) and みりん (mirin). Use HalalNavi or Halal Gourmet Japan, and check recent Google Maps reviews, as restaurants open and close quickly.

You can pray at KIX, Namba CITY (ask at the information counter), USJ's Family Service Rooms and Kyoto Craft Center. Mosques in the region include Masjid Istiqlal Osaka and the Kobe Muslim Mosque; check Friday prayer times first.

The qibla from Osaka is about 291° (west-northwest). Set Muslim Pro to Osaka; in mid-October, Subuh is around 4:29 and Maghrib around 17:26. Many hotels keep a prayer mat, so ask at check-in.

Kyoto and Nara halal restaurants, a Japanese halal phrase card and seasonal prayer times are in the Osaka guidebook.

Getting around: ICOCA, not a JR pass

The ICOCA card

  • Japan's tap card, like Touch 'n Go: trains, subway, buses and convenience stores.
  • Buy it at the JR machines at Kansai-Airport Station (¥2,000 including a ¥500 deposit). Load about ¥5,000 for this trip.
  • Before you fly home, spend the balance at a convenience store or return the card at a JR ticket office.

Do you need a JR Kansai Area Pass?

Not for this route. Most journeys use non-JR lines (Nankai, Kintetsu, Keihan, Hanshin, buses). The 2-day pass costs ¥4,800 but replaces only about ¥2,060 of JR fares, so ICOCA saves you about RM70. It only pays off if you add Himeji.

Osaka Amazing Pass for Day 4

The 1-day pass (¥3,500) covers the Osaka Metro, city buses and free entry to the Osaka Castle main tower, Tsutenkaku and the Tombori River Cruise. Start using it before 15:00.

Japan's new 2026 rules: food, tax refunds & plugs

Bringing Malaysian food (from 1 July 2026)

  • Usually fine: sealed snacks, sambal, soy sauce and spices in sealed packs, and instant noodles including chicken or beef flavour (factory-made, no visible meat).
  • Declare, officer decides: factory retort pouches or cans with meat, such as a rendang pouch, plus fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Not allowed: home-cooked meat dishes, serunding, dendeng, sausages and raw eggs.

Answer YES in Visit Japan Web and visit the quarantine counter after baggage claim. Declaring is never an offence; hiding meat products can bring a fine of up to ¥3 million.

Tax-free is now a refund system (from 1 November 2026)

Pay the full price including 10% tax in the shop (minimum ¥5,000 per shop per day) and show your passport. Keep the goods unused, with receipts, in your hand luggage, then scan your passport at a tax-free kiosk at KIX before checking in bags. Allow at least 20 extra minutes.

Plugs

Japan uses Type A plugs (two flat pins) at 100V, so Malaysian 3-pin plugs do not fit: bring an adapter. Phone and laptop chargers rated 100–240V work fine.

Book before you go

  • USJ tickets: dated, and since 1 September 2026 each date's price rises as it sells.
  • A Namba hotel: within 5 minutes of the station. Book a twin for separate beds, and book early for cherry blossom and autumn seasons.
  • Flights, eSIM and travel takaful with medical cover; hospital bills in Japan are expensive.
  • A table at Panga for your Day 4 dinner.

Want to change the order, add Kobe or Himeji, or travel as a big family? Pimana can tailor this itinerary for you.

Is there halal food in Osaka and at USJ?
