Looking for a Sapporo winter itinerary 6 days long? This 6D5N route runs from a single hotel in Sapporo, with a day trip to Otaru, the "Buddha head in the snow" south of the city, and a coach tour to Asahikawa, Biei and Furano. It suits first-time snow travellers, families and Muslim travellers, and works best from December to March.

Sapporo, Hokkaido's capital, is known for deep powdery snow, fresh seafood and a calmer pace than Tokyo or Osaka. Planning another part of Japan too? Read our Osaka itinerary for 5 days.

Sapporo 6-day itinerary

One hotel means no repacking. Here is the overview; the full Sapporo 6D5N guidebook has exact times, maps and booking links.

Day 1: Arrive in Sapporo, halal ramen and Odori

  • Subuh falls during the overnight flight, so plan to pray on board.
  • Take the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station (about 37 minutes, ≈ ¥1,300), drop your bags and have lunch at Fukunoki, a ramen shop near Susukino that uses halal-certified meat.
  • Later, walk from Odori Park through the covered Tanukikoji arcade to the neon of Susukino.
  • Tip: Pack your jacket, hat and gloves in your hand luggage, and buy hand warmers (kairo) at the airport konbini.

Day 2: Otaru day trip

Otaru is an old harbour town of canals and glass shops, 35–50 minutes away on the JR Hakodate Line (≈ ¥800).

  • Ride the Tenguyama Ropeway to the 532 m summit for views over Otaru and the bay.
  • Pray Zohor at Masjid Al-Noor, then have kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) at Donburi Chaya.
  • Browse Sakaimachi Street (Kitaichi Glass, the Music Box Museum, LeTAO) and reach Otaru Canal at dusk, when the gas lamps come on.
  • Tip: Sit on the right-hand side of the train, facing forward. After Zenibako the line runs along the sea.

Day 3: Hill of the Buddha, Takino and Mt Moiwa

  • Take the Namboku Line to Makomanai, then a bus to the Hill of the Buddha at Makomanai Takino Cemetery. Architect Tadao Ando wrapped a 13.5 m stone Buddha in a man-made hill, so only its head rises above the white slope.
  • Continue to Takino Snow World for free tube sledding and a gentle beginners' slope.
  • Ride the Mt Moiwa Ropeway (531 m) before sunset and watch the city light up.
  • Tip: Pack lunch, as food is limited near the parks. The Hill of the Buddha is a working cemetery, so keep your voice low.

Day 4: Asahiyama, Biei and Furano tour

The longest and coldest day: Asahikawa and Furano can drop below −15 °C. Book a day tour with a return coach from Sapporo (≈ RM380–450).

  • Asahiyama Zoo: king penguins waddle along a snowy path past visitors, mid-December to mid-March.
  • Biei: the Christmas Tree, a lone spruce in white farmland and Hokkaido's most famous winter postcard.
  • Ningle Terrace, Furano: 15 log cabins in a snowy forest selling handmade crafts.
  • Tip: Check whether the zoo ticket (¥1,000) is included, and bring a light prayer mat. The Christmas Tree stands on private farmland, so stay on the road.

Day 5: Sapporo city and shopping

  • Start at quiet Nakajima Park, then Odori Park (the Snow Festival venue) and the TV Tower deck.
  • See Akarenga, the 1888 red-brick former government office reopened in July 2025, and the Sapporo Clock Tower.
  • Lunch at Nijo Market before noon, as many stalls close early.
  • Shop along Tanukikoji: Mega Don Quijote (open 24 hours), Daiso, Onitsuka Tiger and Animate.

Day 6: Fly home

  • Check out early and take the JR train so you reach New Chitose 2½–3 hours before departure.
  • Claim your tax refund at customs first, then buy Royce and Shiroi Koibito in the domestic terminal before check-in.
  • You land at KLIA2 in the evening; Zohor and Asar fall during the flight.

The guidebook adds times for every stop, Google Maps links, prayer times, Japanese place names for taxi drivers and a plan B for blizzard days.

Halal food & prayer spaces

Halal-certified restaurants are still few in Hokkaido, but Sapporo has the most choice. Know the three levels: halal-certified (certificate at the entrance), Muslim-friendly (no pork or alcohol, no certificate) and pork-free (a normal kitchen).

  • Fukunoki (Susukino): ramen with halal-certified meat, no pork or alcohol. Usually closed Mondays and some Tuesdays.
  • Ramen Sapporo Ichiryuan (Tanukikoji): Muslim-friendly halal ramen; reserve and ask for the "halal-friendly" menu.
  • Taj Mahal: biryani, curry and naan; Muslim-friendly, not certified.
  • Farm to Table TERRA: halal and vegetarian dishes clearly marked.
  • Warung Jawa: Indonesian food such as ayam bakar and nasi campur.
  • Donburi Chaya (Nijo Market and Otaru): Muslim-friendly options; ask for no mirin or sake.

For packaged food, scan the ingredients with Google Translate's camera and look for 豚 (pork), ラード (lard), ゼラチン (gelatin) and みりん (mirin).

Where to pray:

  • Sapporo Masjid, Kita 14 Nishi 3, near Kita-12-jo Station (Namboku Line), one stop from Sapporo Station. Friday prayers and a women's area.
  • Masjid Al-Noor, Otaru, a 10–15 minute walk from the station.
  • New Chitose Airport: prayer rooms in both terminals.

In mid-February, Subuh is around 5 am and Maghrib around 5 pm. Use Muslim Pro set to Sapporo, and ask your hotel for the qibla direction or a prayer mat.

Winter clothing & staying safe on ice

How cold is it?

  • Sapporo and Otaru: about −7 °C to 0 °C by day in January–February; nights reach −10 °C.
  • Asahikawa, Biei and Furano (Day 4): −15 °C or colder.

Dress in three layers

  1. Base: thermal top and leggings (Uniqlo HEATTECH works).
  2. Mid: fleece or sweater; take it off indoors.
  3. Outer: wind- and waterproof hooded jacket, plus snow trousers for Takino and Day 4.

Add anti-slip snow boots, a hat and thick gloves. Don't overbuy at home: Uniqlo, Workman and Don Quijote in Sapporo sell thermals and ice grips.

Avoid slipping

  • Walk like a penguin: short steps, feet flat, hands out of your pockets.
  • Wear ice grips and watch for "black ice" at crossings.
  • Keep your phone and power bank in an inside pocket; batteries die fast in the cold.

Transport & tax-free shopping

IC card, not a rail pass

  • Use an IC card (Suica, Kitaca, PASMO) on JR, subway, trams and buses; iPhone users can add Suica to Apple Wallet.
  • All JR trains on this itinerary cost about ¥4,200 per person, against ¥22,000 for a 5-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. Skip the pass.

The new tax-free system

From 1 November 2026, you pay the full price including 10% consumption tax. Spend ¥5,000 or more (before tax) in one shop, register the purchase with your passport, then claim the tax back at customs when you leave Japan. Keep the goods and passport handy at the airport.

Book before you go

  1. AirAsia X flights, 3–6 months ahead, with a Value Pack.
  2. Hotel near Sapporo, Odori or Susukino station, with free cancellation (6–12 months ahead for festival week).
  3. Day 4 tour and Tenguyama Ropeway ticket, about a month before.
  4. Takaful or travel insurance covering winter medical costs and delays.
  5. eSIM, bought and activated in Malaysia.
