Contents
Planning a Tokyo Fuji itinerary 6 days long for winter? This 6D5N route packs three sides of Japan into one trip: the city of Tokyo, Mount Fuji from the shore of Lake Kawaguchi, and real snow at GALA Yuzawa. Every long journey is by train. It suits first-timers to Japan, couples and small families, from 19 December 2026 to mid-March 2027.
You don't need to ski, but one person must drive around Fuji on Days 2–3 (a bus version exists). Want a full Hokkaido snow trip instead? Read our Sapporo winter itinerary for 6 days.

Tokyo Fuji 6-day itinerary
Akihabara is the base for the last three nights: it is close to Ueno (Shinkansen to GALA), Tokyo Station (N'EX) and two mosques. Here is the overview; times, prayer slots and daily costs are in the Tokyo, Fuji & GALA Yuzawa 6D5N guidebook.
Day 1: Land at Narita, N'EX to Shinjuku
- At Narita T2's JR EAST Travel Service Center, redeem your N'EX return and JR Tokyo Wide Pass with your passport, and buy a Welcome Suica.
- Ride the N'EX to Shinjuku (about 85 minutes). Lunch at Gyumon Shinjuku East Exit or Shinjuku-tei; both have a prayer space.
- Buy winter layers at UNIQLO Shinjuku Honten and GU Shinjuku Flags.
- Tip: Have the hotel send big bags to your Akihabara hotel by Yamato takkyubin and take a small bag to Fuji.
Day 2: Fuji Excursion, Nenba and sunset at Oishi Park
- Take the Fuji Excursion to Kawaguchiko (about 2 hours, covered by the pass) and pick up a rental car near the station.
- Drive to Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba, a thatched-roof village on Lake Saiko. Lunch at Momoya, then visit "Kedai Nenek" next door, a snack stall popular with Muslim travellers (no halal certificate found).
- Sunset at Oishi Park, on Lake Kawaguchi's north shore.
- Pray Maghrib and Isyak at Masjid Fujikawaguchiko and eat at its halal cafe or a restaurant nearby.
- Tip: Lakeside roads get icy in the evening. Drive slowly and never stop on the hard shoulder for photos.
Day 3: Lake Yamanaka, Oshino Hakkai and back to Tokyo
- Fuji is most often clear on winter mornings, so drive early to Nagaike Shinsui Park on Lake Yamanaka.
- Oshino Hakkai: eight spring-fed ponds of Fuji snowmelt. Don't throw coins in.
- Refuel, eat and pray at the mosque, return the car, then photograph the Lawson "Fuji" opposite Kawaguchiko Station.
- Fuji Excursion back to Shinjuku, then JR to Akihabara. For halal wagyu, book PANGA Ueno on TableCheck.
- Tip: Residents near this Lawson have long been bothered: use the crossing, shoot quickly and move on.
Day 4: Day trip to the snow at GALA Yuzawa
The "Tanigawa" Shinkansen from Ueno reaches GALA Yuzawa in about 70 minutes, and the station sits at the foot of the gondola.
- Choose snow play and sledding, beginner ski or snowboard, Snow Kart or Moon Bike.
- GALA has no confirmed halal food or prayer room. Pack meat-free halal food, a thin prayer mat and a plastic bag for your shoes.
- Back in Akihabara, combine Maghrib and Isyak at Masjid Nusantara and eat at Nikoniko Mazemen & Curry opposite.
- Tip: The 2026/27 Tanigawa timetable was not out in Oct 2026; confirm it first.
Day 5: Asakusa, Harajuku and sunset at Shibuya Sky
- Sensoji and Kaminarimon before the crowds, then Nakamise-dori. Don't eat while walking.
- Ginza Line to Omotesando and walk to Takeshita Street, Harajuku.
- Lunch at Shinjuku-tei Shibuya or Gyumon Harajuku/Jinnan, and pray at Shibuya PARCO 5F.
- Shibuya Sky at sunset; on clear days Fuji appears as a silhouette on the horizon. Finish at the Scramble Crossing.
- Tip: Littering in Shibuya can mean a ¥2,000 fine (since 1 Jun 2026), so carry a small bag.
Day 6: Akihabara and home
- Souvenirs at Yodobashi Akiba and Don Quijote Akihabara.
- Lunch at Ayam-ya (cash only). On a Friday, pray at Masjid As-Salaam Okachimachi or Masjid Darul Arqam Asakusa.
- N'EX from Tokyo Station to Narita T2. Visit the tax refund kiosk before checking in bags, and eat before security.
The guidebook adds exact times, a map, Google Maps links and a plan B for cloudy or windy days.

Halal food & prayer spaces
The guidebook rates each restaurant as certified by a JAKIM-recognised body (such as JHF), certified by another body, self-declared, or serves alcohol.
- Gyumon (Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Ueno, Asakusa): self-declared halal; most branches have a prayer room.
- Momoya (Nenba): halal meat and seasonings, halal kitchen, no alcohol. Closed Thursdays.
- Idaten Bettei (Kawaguchiko): certified (other body); no pork, alcohol or mirin. Not to be confused with Fuji Tempura IDATEN, which serves alcohol.
- Halal Wagyu Yakiniku PANGA Ueno: JHF-certified, but serves alcohol.
- Ayam-ya (Akihabara): certified (other body), chicken ramen, prayer space.
On snack labels, look for 豚 (pork), ラード (lard), ゼラチン (gelatine) and みりん (mirin). Book hotels "room only": Japanese hotel breakfasts almost always include pork or mirin-based sauces.
Where to pray:
- Masjid Nusantara Akihabara, 7 minutes from JR Akihabara, with a women's room.
- Masjid Fujikawaguchiko: room for about 200, separate ablution areas for men and women.
- Shibuya PARCO 5F: men's and women's rooms with an ablution area.
- Friday prayers: Masjid As-Salaam Okachimachi, Masjid Darul Arqam Asakusa or Tokyo Camii.
- Narita T2: 1st-floor prayer room, before and after security.
The prayer rooms at Takashimaya, Laox and Musalla Kabukicho in Shinjuku have closed; use a restaurant prayer space or Masjid Shin-Okubo.
Qibla from Tokyo is about 293° (north-west). In mid-January, Subuh is around 05:11 and Maghrib 16:51 (JAKIM method); add about 4 minutes in Kawaguchiko and Yuzawa. The itinerary suggests jamak and qasar on long travel days; ask an ustaz if unsure.
Driving around Fuji (or taking the bus)
IDP and rental car
- Malaysian IDPs are valid in Japan; carry the physical booklet, your Malaysian licence and passport.
- Get the new-format IDP (since May 2024) from JPJ: RM150, valid one year. Old-format IDPs were reportedly rejected in Japan in 2024.
- Rent a compact car for 24 hours near Kawaguchiko Station (from about ¥6,820) with "studless" snow tyres.
- Drive on the left, and refuel from the red nozzle (レギュラー, regular).
No driver?
Follow the bus version in the Tokyo Fuji guidebook: the Kawaguchiko Sightseeing Bus to Nenba and Oishi Park, plus the Fujiyoshida–Oshino–Yamanakako bus pass in the Jorudan app. It is slower, so skip Lake Yamanaka if time is tight.
GALA snow & Japan rules
Clothing and GALA rentals
- January: Tokyo 10°C/1°C, Kawaguchiko 6°C/−6°C, GALA 3°C/−3°C. Wear layers that come off easily, as trains and shops are warm.
- GALA rents ski jackets and trousers, boots and goggles. Gloves are not for rent, so buy them at UNIQLO or GU.
Customs and tax-free
- All meat products are banned, including serunding, beef rendang and meat pau. Dried ikan bilis is usually allowed.
- From 1 Nov 2026, tax-free becomes a refund system: pay full price (minimum ¥5,000 per shop), then scan your passport at the airport before check-in, with the goods on you.
Book before you go
- Flights and "room only" hotels, 2–3 months ahead.
- JR Tokyo Wide Pass and N'EX return, a month ahead. Fuji Excursion and Tanigawa seats open one month before travel, at 10:00 Japan time.
- Rental car with snow tyres, plus a new-format IDP.
- Shibuya Sky (sales open two weeks ahead, 23:00 Malaysia time) and GALA tickets.
